Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay’s rally has suffered a terrible disaster. At least 31 people, including children, were killed in a stampede at a rally of his party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district on Saturday (September 27, 2025). The Hindu reported this, citing state Health Minister Maa Subramanian.
According to his information, at least 31 people have died in the rally. Among the deceased are 9 men, 14 women and 4 children. The death toll may rise, NDTV reported, citing local hospital sources.
About 500 people have been admitted to the hospital and at least 400 more are being brought. Senior police officer of Karur district, Davidson Devasirvatham, said that the situation is very critical.
Eyewitnesses said that thousands of supporters had gathered at the rally venue since Saturday morning. They waited for Vijay for about 6 hours in the scorching sun and intense heat. But when he arrived late, the situation got out of control due to the pressure of the crowd.
Vijay was giving a speech when many people started fainting due to the excessive crowd and heat. At that time, he suddenly stopped his speech and threw water bottles from the bus. But by then, many were trampled underfoot and seriously injured due to the rush.
Local media reported that at least 30,000 people had gathered for the rally that day. As a result, ambulances had a lot of trouble reaching the spot. Although the injured were rushed to the hospital, the condition of many is critical.
After receiving the news of the incident, the state Health Minister M Subramanian rushed to Karur. Chief Minister M K Stalin ordered the district secretary V Senthilbalaji to keep the situation under control. In a message sent by X, he wrote that the news coming from Karur is worrying, everyone admitted to the hospital has been asked to get immediate treatment.
After the incident, the ruling party of Tamil Nadu, DMK, has accused Vijay of negligence and demanded his arrest. This incident of the loss of life of a supporter has thrown Vijay’s political future into a new controversy.
